Before you call

Three quick checks can save a service call: make sure the thermostat is set to cool and below room temperature, look at the air filter, and check the breaker. If a breaker tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call, because repeated resets can damage the compressor.

Built for Tampa

Tampa heat and humidity work an AC hard

An air conditioner here runs most of the year, and it has to pull moisture out of the air as well as cool it. That shapes how a system should be sized, how often it needs service, and what tends to break.

  • A long cooling season.More hours of running means parts wear out sooner than in milder climates.
  • Humidity is half the job.A system that's too big cools the house fast but leaves it clammy.
  • Drain lines clog.Algae grows in the condensate line. A clogged line can shut the AC off or leak into the ceiling.
  • Storms and surges.Lightning and outages are hard on capacitors and control boards. If the outdoor unit sat in floodwater, have it checked before running it.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The usual suspects are a clogged filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter first. If that's not it, call.

Why is water leaking from my AC?

Almost always a clogged condensate drain line. Many systems have a float switch that shuts the AC off when the line backs up, which is why the AC may also stop cooling.

Is it normal for the AC to run all afternoon in summer?

Long run times on the hottest afternoons can be normal. If it runs nonstop and the house never reaches the set temperature, something's wrong: a dirty filter or coil, a refrigerant leak or leaky ducts.

How much does an AC repair cost?

It depends on the part. Clearing a drain line or replacing a capacitor is a small bill. A compressor or coil on an older system can cost enough that a replacement makes more sense. You get the price before work starts.
